Nathan Hart

Cheyenne artist, Nathan Hart is a self-taught wood turner, but what exactly is woodturning? In the most basic sense, the artist uses a lathe to turn a block of wood, manipulating the shape to create a hollow form by shaving away and turning pieces for a smooth finish. The technique is both involved and precise, with varying needs depending on the desired product.

Hart’s wooden vessels evoke the warmth and richness of the medium, playing up the abstract patterns created in the grain while also incorporating symbolism of his heritage. His work is mesmerizing and sophisticated, delicate and graceful.

This conversation between tradition and innovation is what make Hart’s work so powerful. You can see more of his work on the Berlin Gallery website.

Also be sure to come see Hart’s work in person (don’t forget to check out his technique!) at the Berlin Gallery in the upcoming show The Nature of Form: Rick Bartow and Nathan Hart opening, October 21, 2011.
